The team dinner
Bemusement
Currently, my line of work entails using an "enterprise resource planning" to automate some fairly regular financial processes. I, sometimes, feel that the said tool is more of a euphemism to an archaic accounting journal, which is what the buyer wants. I am nonplussed and utter myself that they want, what they want. I am digressing.
However, I am more bemused, because, apparently taking a dump in this line of work, is to export all the records from the system. It is funnier if you get involved in the situation. Suddenly, a person in the meeting would say, lets take a dump of the table. What? I was initially surprised but these days, I use every chance I get to utter the phrase and laugh myself to shit.
"Lets take a dump" Shall we?

Reading bandwagon
It has been harder to read of late. Professional cobwebs have been merciless, so much so, that, despite a better financial situation than my previous line of work, it is much difficult to enjoy the incoming cash flow. The list of my awaited reading is going up. What I have observed is that, amidst such hectic times, the comics are easier to enjoy and get involved with. Read, Alan Moore's Watchmen again. What an amazing read on top of some great art. Also, Grant's Arkham Asylum. What an amazing artwork, albeit darker. Currently, reading Miller's Ronin and I shall say, I love every bit of it.
I can read comics much faster and internalize the content. I mean, I have no shame in admitting that, Shogun by Clavell is harder to read amidst my unforgiving professional grind over Moore's swamp thing. Graphic novels are quite enticing to read after a draining and mentally demanding day job.
My experience with online lectures
Experience
The pandemic struck during the winter semester of my management education. It was both shocking and demanding at different levels that sent the education system on its toes, transitioning to an online mode. I was happier that few difficult exams were postponed given my difficult marathon with travelling salesman problems and optimization theory wherein despite his interesting lectures he was allergic to computation and rather insisted preposterous calculation over paper. Somehow, the pandemic was a respite from the gaining work.
Soon, the online classes started. I understood, why, university in-person classes trumps every other mode all time. These classes, albeit helpful in covering enormous content, were largely unsatisfactory. Unsatisfactory in a sense that, these classes undermined my natural curiosity for new concepts and situations. It was harder to grasp different perspectives for intricate topics like “effect of inflation on unemployed” and opine. I spent more time in understanding concepts. Nearly double. Inefficient.
The far-reaching aspect of the in-person classes is the jokes, professors crack.
I remember my economics professor angrily saying, that, I am not here, to crack jokes. I see no demand. It took a few minutes to see what he was saying. We had a good laugh. It is a boring joke, but it worked. These made the classes more interactive. Jokes did not work online. Period. Online mode was audacious enough to enervate every ounce of last zeal from an extremely interesting topic.
Conversation
During such trying times, I realized that the learning is more of a social event combining discussion, jokes, debates, travel & some cricket on top of serious lectures. Absence of all these, made learning akin to adding new columns to a database. I had an interesting conversation with my professor on this. Here is the gist of it.
Me: What do you think about this semester?
Prof: Indifferent.
Me: How do you mean?
Prof: With online, I do not really know how my words are received.
Me: Are you doubting that, we, students are listening you ?
Prof: No. No. It is more about the facial expressions, I get to see during my lecture. I would perceive whether what I have said, is well received. Over time with my 4 decades of experience I am able to understand how the class feels about the lecture and steer accordingly. I, badly missed this during the online transition.
Me: So what do you think about this online delivery system?
Prof: I think lecturing online is a different set of skills. I am of the opinion that online mode should assist campus and not replace it. The other important point is that, teachers across the country(India) should be trained to do this. Trust me, online lecture delivery is a different ball game. Should there be lockdown in the future, we should be ready to use the online mode better.
The professors were on the same boat as students. My courses were mathematically intensive combining finance and data science for management and were framed for a classroom set-up. Sudden transitions required changing the framework to suit better delivery like choosing the right software for lectures, scheduling and nature of examinations.
Conversation 2
They ask questions. They are curious. They ask questions again.
The other interesting conversation I had, was with my mother, who is a kindergarten teacher for over 3 decades. An amazing soul, she told me that offline schooling is hugely important, particularly in kindergarten and elementary education. She felt that the conversations amongst children are quite important for elementary education. She says, they frame opinions like ‘I like blue, but I do not like red’. I love chocolate but not strawberry. They tell stories of how they enjoyed breakfast to me or to their nearby friends. They describe what they observed during their travel from home to school. They do the same when they get back home. They ask questions. They are curious. They ask questions again. They learn lot many things by observing others. This healthy social interaction helps them to understand about space, speed and other basic things that we adults take it for granted. I was quite surprised when my mother mentioned about the activity of running. She told me that, when they play they run around. They understand how to manage the speeds. In fact, they learn from their friends that they can run faster or slower depending how far they have to reach. They understand the distance. They try to remember shapes, stories, colors, foods and more importantly time to describe it to others. They develop friendships and they want to help their friends. These help kids in improving memory, contribute to mental and physical health and help them grow. She felt that she did not get the same reception for her online classes and remarked that kids need to meet other kids.
I realized that in person education is vital. It helps in many ways we scarcely noticed. It helps widen our perspective and substantiate those that we learnt in the course. I strongly believe that online mode should complement the in-person and not replace it.
Freedom conundrum
We over-complicate ideas. It irks me that we are not honest as well. What is freedom? Well, there is nothing called freedom. Sorry for the bad news. Freedom in its absolute definition is that there are no rules, no one to tell a man what to do? The first man in the jungles had freedom. He is free to kill an animal for food, down a tree for shelter and utter whatever he thinks. He is free in the most accurate sense of freedom. What we mean freedom is acceptance of the laws or some arbitrary construct of a country and/or situation. That is about as much freedom we can define. Now that is not freedom to be exact. We gave up freedom for a certain order to prevail and to enable us, live and not murder. We crave for order thinking that it is freedom. It is most definitely good. It improves our standard of life in accordance with times. We sacrifice some freedom as an opportunity-cost which guarantees peaceful times. Good, I say.
Freedom is a permission. Freedom is a trade-off.
Freedom of speech is murky in all democracies. It has to be the simplest amongst freedom types, however many they are. It is that we can utter anything. Of course, they are somewhat guided by the laws of democracies. As it turns out, we are deceitful. We took “getting offended” to a whole new gargantuan level of freedom of speech. We are much “liberal” that we do not entertain a counter point. Not even friendly squabble. A mere tiff here and there. A slight astray, poop is already towards the fan, at mach speeds. Freedom of speech is not a reason to be offended for every sentence. No law, force or government on earth can prevent from being offended.
What a mess? There is always a trade-off. As soon as the modern society was born, there is only degree of freedom. Of course, with permission.

I envy musicians even more. I double down the jealousy here. I once saw a percussionist wielding an Indian drum called Mridangam exhibiting his rhythmic cycles and I thought he was in a trance and so were listeners. They thought the Mridangam was singing. He was happy and ever smiling for the whole of 10 minute performance. The tranquil state. The magic of these poets and musicians is that, they express their feelings, fondness, happiness through words, strings and rhythms. I can feel it. How am I able to feel it?
Many of Ilayaraja’s songs have this strange magic with them. They make you forget the extant and lull you into this 5 minute world that he has mysteriously crafted. If the song is about rains and the rains are everywhere? That is how potent, Raja is. Heck, poets can give bravery to fellow humans. It happened quite many times here in India in its long and tortuous freedom struggle. Immense influencers, these poets are! From Wordsworth’s Reaper to Bharathi’s strong women, poets are the true magicians. It helped people gallop against the tides.
Are poets and musicians blessed umpteen with boons and food? Have they successfully bypassed the modern world problems? Tranquility. Even in sorrow, they weave good words and pull strings gleefully. Somehow, I think, their sadness, is somewhat refined.
Maybe they are the true gods. And exalted one at that.
Godless Review
Ain’t nothing scarier than a man with a gun. And ain’t nothing more helpless than a man without one – Frank Griffin

I recently watched Godless, a wild west tv series on Netflix. It was exciting and visually appealing. Throughout the series, a brown haze was present, as if we found ourselves back in time in New Mexico and Colorado.
Alice Fletcher shot Roy Goode of Griffin’s when he was trespassing her ranch, situated outside mysterious La Belle. Along with Iyovi, a Paiute, who is Alice’s mother-in-law nursed him back to life. When the sheriff Bill McNue, arrived at the ranch, Roy informs that he had broken out of Frank Griffin’s stealing their money and holding them out in a canyon.
Frank Griffin, the father and leader of Griffin’s, is a menacing outlaw who is terrorizing the west, is on a murdering spree starting at Creede in hunting Roy, for Frank, the gang is family. Jeff Daniels as Frank, who I quickly remembered from Speed was excellent. Bill McNue, realized that Griffins shelling LaBelle, is a matter of time and set out to track the outlaws before all the blood was spilt. The rest of the story is about how the strong and independent women of LaBelle captained by the brave and determined, Mary McNue, the sister of Bill, along with Alice, are fending off the Griffins.
Godless, was not run of the mill wild west, with spinning colts. It was a serious and enthralling series, around strong women, who are not reluctant to defend themselves. Jeff Daniels was ominous. The rest of the cast were as good. In fact, modern sensibilities were included and it was quite satisfying. After the final episode of homecoming, I felt, I should have watched this much earlier.
A must watch.
Let me know how you felt about it.

What an amazing space ride The Hail Mary is
![]() |
My copy of the book |
Project Hail Mary is mankind’s biggest project, which is supposedly, the answer to the global dimming event was headed by Stratt, a powerful woman with absolute authority whose sole aim to complete the mission within deadlines. There are many instances where Stratt’s decisions were dictated mostly by the deadline. She was quite right. She reckoned that, should the mission be successful, mankind will have some time to respond, after the information is relayed from tau ceti. Dr. Grace, who was one of the first members of her team to build Hail Mary, believed in her firm leadership and vouched for her fearless decisions when she ordered to release methane from Antartica to reduce cooling of earth and to buy a realistic window for the Hail Mary succeed. But he would start to question his views on Stratt when he ended up being one of astronauts aboard Hail Mary.
Following this, Dr. Grace finds himself in many unthinkable situations in deep space and how he works, forms the story. Weir’s clean and emphatic writing throughout, render many exciting situations during Grace travel, much more gripping. I did not put down this book till I was done. In fact, I would say that this one of the books I read in a day or two. Such an engaging one it was. This book is now, among my space book favorites which are Hitchikers guide & rendezvous with rama.
there and back again
Writing is strange. Sometimes I want to attract the grand audience, telling stories of Oden league. Sooner, I realize that my stories are boring at gargantuan proportions. I mean who, upon their, sanity, would think others would read the stories and ramblings I blurt. Supposedly, blogging is not a medium anymore.
Journaling feels good. It helps me read more. Over the past few years, I have read lesser. Professional cobwebs have not been kind. Contemplated more and morosely. I have a long list of books to enjoy. I have to start at some point. I well and truly believe that blogging helps me to share spiciest of all things. Ideas. And helps me read more.
I was helped by ideas present in many forums, wikis, reddits, quoras & many other blogs. Hence, it is quite right, share my ideas or mostly impatient ramblings.
There & back again.
